In the stage two exam you will be expected to have a detailed and practical knowledge about tack. Whilst fitting, putting on and removing tack you must show competency, work at industry speed and consider the safety of the horse, yourself and other candidates. Practice all the practical tasks to ensure you are confident and efficient in the exam.
Task 1
- Practice putting on and fitting a standard bridle.
- Practice fitting different types of snaffle bits.
Task 2
- Practice putting on and fitting different types of nosebands correctly, including the:
- cavesson noseband.
- crank noseband.
- dropped noseband.
- flash noseband.
- grackle noseband.
- sheepskin noseband.
Task 3
- Practice putting on and fitting a hunting breastplate.
Task 4
- Practice fitting saddles to different breeds of horses.
Task 5
- Practice checking a saddle for a broken tree.
Task 6
- Practice putting on and removing tack using exam techniques. The more you rehearse this, the quicker and efficient you will be in the exam.
Task 7
- Practice putting on, fitting and removing:
- fetlock boots.
- over-reach boots.
- brushing boots.
Once you are well rehearsed, before taking this exam, ask a BHS instructor to observe you completing tasks 1-7.
