There are several types of bedding that can be used in the stable. As each one has a different function, it is vital to choose the correct one for each equine otherwise it can adversely affect the health of the horse.

Furthermore, whichever one is selected, it must be kept as clean as possible. Dirty or wet bedding will create a breeding ground for bacteria. This can cause a host of issues for the horse including foot issues, such as thrush or soft hooves, plus the higher levels of ammonia can irritate their respiratory system. Likewise, most materials used for bedding produce dust at a various levels, this can irritate the horse’s respiratory system causing serious or permanent damage to the horse’s lungs.

Bedding is used for the following reasons:

• to encourage the horse to rest and lie down.
• to encourage the horse to stale.
• to absorb ammonia.
• to prevent injuries such as bruising, capped elbow or hocks.
• to provide cushioning for the horse’s legs, and to prevent jarring against the hard surface.
• to prevent the horse slipping or falling.
• to provide warmth, insulation and prevent draughts.
• for cleanliness.
• for the horse’s comfort.

The following points needs to be considered when choosing bedding:

• cost.
• availability.
• quality of the bedding.
• ease of disposal.
• storage.
• the amount of dust the bedding produces, especially if the horse has a respiratory issue or allergy.
• if the bedding will be an irritant to the horse’s skin.
• if the horse eats their bedding, some beddings are more eatable than others (straw).
• absorbency of the bedding.
