Mucking out is the removal of droppings and wet bedding from the horse's stable. It should be performed daily to allow the horse to live in a clean and healthy environment, plus prevent the spread of disease. The type of bedding used determines the way a bed is mucked out.
Bedding down is the term given to laying bedding on the stable floor. A good bed offers protection to the horse's body and limbs, and provides comfort so they can rest and lie down. Furthermore, it encourages them to stale whilst either absorbing excess urine or allowing it to be drained away.
In the exam, you will be assessed mucking out and maintaining the bed with the correct tools. You will be expected to perform all the tasks at industry speed, observing the safety of yourself, the horse and fellow candidates.
