Stand at the side of the shoulder, facing towards the rear of the horse.
Put your hand on their shoulder.
Run your hand down the back of the horse’s leg.
Continue down their leg to the fetlock. The horse should pick up the leg.
If they don’t pick up their leg: give them a voice command “pick up”, squeeze the back of the leg or lean against their shoulder until they comply.
As the horse picks up their foot, pass your hand around the back of the leg.
Move your hand down to the top of the hoof wall, hold and support the foot from the inside.
Never place your fingers below the horse’s toe.
