The horse's legs are very sensitive, take care not to bang them with the hard side of the brush. Hard bristled brushes should be avoided, especially on fine legs.
Do not groom the horse's legs if they are wet. Wet mud can either be washed off, or allowed to dry and then be groomed.
Using the appropriate brush, start at the top of the leg and groom downward following the direction of the hair. Use your hand to check behind the elbows for any hidden dirt.
Groom downwards, below the horse’s knee or hock, following the direction of the hair.
With your hand check for any skin conditions, wounds, heat or swellings around that area.
Groom downwards to the pastern area following the direction of the hair.
With your hand check for any skin conditions, wounds, heat or swellings around that area.
Thoroughly check the back of the pastern area for wounds, or skin conditions, that the feathers may hide from sight.
