Extreme care must be taken when cleaning the horse's eyes. To prevent the spread of infection, only use disposable wipes, or dampened cotton wool. A sponge will hold any possible infection, or bacteria, which could spread from one eye to the other. If you are asked to demonstrate how to clean the horse's eyes in the exam, untie them but keep their headcollar and leadrope on.

A fine clear, white discharge from the eyes is normal. If the discharge becomes a thick yellow/green colour, the eye is sore, inflamed or the mucous membrane is red seek veterinary advice.

Step 1

Using a disposable wipe, gently clean across the outside of the eye from back to front.

Do not rub, or place the wipe into the horse’s eye.

If it needs repeating use a second wipe.

Step 2

Using a second disposable wipe, clean around the front of their eye area.
