This procedure is done on stable-kept horses, just before tacking up. It is intended as a quick groom to smarten the equine before being exercised; it should take around 5-10 minutes to complete. If the horse is fully clipped, or has a fine coat, groom in a rug to prevent them getting cold.
Tie the horse up.
Pick out all four hooves into a skip bucket, also checking their hooves and shoes.
Remove any bedding from the mane with your fingers.
Using a body brush, groom the mane over onto the right hand side.
If the mane is sticking up, dampen it down with warm water.
Remove any shavings or straw from the tail with your fingers.
Groom the tail with the body brush or tail brush.
Groom their face with the body brush.
If necessary wipe the eyes with dampened cotton wool, or disposable eye wipes.
Clean their nostrils and muzzle with a sponge.
Groom both sides of their body with the body brush and metal curry comb.
If necessary, remove any stable stains with a sponge and warm water.
Groom all of their legs with the body brush, checking for any lumps, bumps or wounds.
Tack the horse up.
