In the exam, this procedure is done for both your's and the horse's safety. By putting the headcollar around his neck, it allows you to freely perform tasks to his head area, whilst still being in control of him. In this situation, to prevent serious injury to the horse's neck if he pulls back or panics, the quick release knot must be untied at all times.
Un-tie up the quick release knot.
Leave the leadrope threaded through the string.
Put the headcollar around the horse’s neck.
Perform the task. This may include grooming his head or putting on a bridle.
Once the task is completed replace the headcollar and re- tie the horse up correctly.
