Once you have competed Handling the Horse you will be able to:

  1. Recognise and discuss the different styles of headcollars.

  2. Identify and talk about the dangers of using an ill fitting headcollar.

  3. Put on and remove a headcollar & halter.

  4. Fit a headcollar and halter.

  5. Tie up an equine correctly.

  6. Discuss the dangers of tying up an equine incorrectly.

  7. Tie up a horse in and outside of the stable safely.

  8. Tie and untie a quick release knot.

  9. Correctly approach a horse in the stable.

  10. Encourage a horse to come to the door before you enter the stable.

  11. Discuss possible reasons why a horse is unwilling to be caught in the stable and how to handle these issues.

  12. Hold a horse for inspection.

  13. Stand a horse square.

  14. Lead a horse in walk and trot for an observer.

  15. Lead a horse in a headcollar and bridle.

  16. Discuss the dangers of leading a horse incorrectly.

  17. Turn out a horse into the field, safely and correctly.

  18. Catch a horse in the field.

  19. Bring in a horse from the field, safely and correctly.

  20. Discuss how to handle horses who are difficult catch in the field.

  21. Talk about and use methods to encourage horses to be caught.

  22. Handle horses safely in the field.

  23. Perform routine field checks.

  24. Recognise and interpret the horse's facial expressions and body language.

  25. Handle horses according to their behaviour.
