Removing the dirt and dust particles from the nostrils, plus cleaning the muzzle and lips will improve the horse's appearance. A fine, clear, white discharge from the nostrils is normal. If the discharge becomes a thick, yellow or green colour seek veterinary advice.

Untie the horse, but keep their headcollar and leadrope on, if asked to demonstrate how to clean the horse's nostrils in the exam.

Step 1

Use a clean sponge to gently wipe in and around the nostril area.

Step 2

Wipe all over the muzzle and lips.
