Once you have completed Fitness you will be able to:

  • Discuss the signs of an unfit horse, including: 

    • describe a horse in soft condition. 

    • know how the horse's physical appearance adapts in response to exercise. 

    • explain how to monitor the horse's recovery rates post exercise, and the reasons behind these checks.

    • understand how to monitor respiration rates during and post exercise, plus monitor related health issues.

    • be able to detect signs of fatigue.

    • understand the importance of monitoring the horse sweating up, and offer methods to prevent overheating. 

    • explain how to prevent sore or stiff muscles following exercise. 

    • describe what to do if the horse displays dull or listless behaviours post exercise. 

  •  Talk about the reasons for maintaining fitness. 

  • Understand how a fitness programme alters during the first 1-8 weeks.
