Once you have completed Horse Description, Health & Behaviour you will be able to:

  1. Name, position and describe the points on the horse.

  2. Recognise and name the different genders.

  3. Understand the metrics used for measuring a horse.

  4. Measure an equine for both description and competitions.

  5. Recognise and name different coat colours, leg, facial, & hoof markings.

  6. Discuss the various ways a horse may be identified, for either security or their specific breeding.

  7. Recognise and name UK horse and pony breeds and types, plus state which area of the UK they originate from.

  8. Understand the terms: pure breed, part bred, type, extinction.

  9. Recognise and discuss the signs of good and poor health in a horse.

  10. Observe and maintain equine health:

    • in the stable.

    • in the field.

    • whilst grooming.

    • when tacking up.

    • whilst riding.

  11. Recognise the signs an equine is over or under weight, plus perform a condition score.

  12. Discuss and have knowledge about the comparisons of the wild and domesticated horse's lifestyle.

  13. Explain and understand how the horse's natural instincts affect their behaviour:

    • when turned out in the field.

    • in the stable.

    • when they are startled.

    • when they are left alone.

  14. Talk about dangerous behaviours the horse may display in various environments.
