As you are handling unfamiliar horses in the exam, for safety, you will be expected to follow these steps when changing sides at the front of the horse.

Ducking underneath the horse's neck could upset, panic or cause him to pull back. Not only could the rope seriously hurt your neck, or even strangle you, you are putting yourself at risk of the horse biting your back or bottom!

Step 1

Holding the horse’s headcollar, unclip the leadrope from the headcollar and place it down gently. Do NOT drop it and let it bang on the side of the stable wall.

Step 2

Keeping hold of the horse’s headcollar walk around the front of him, facing towards him. Swap hands so you are holding the other side of the headcollar and pick the leadrope back up.

Step 3

Clip the leadrope back on his headcollar correctly, with the clip facing away from his chin.
