Suitable PPE must be worn at all times.

REMEMBER: You are working with live animals, their needs must be put first at all times!

Before you begin working with the horse you must:

  1. Tie the horse up.
  2. Remove his water (unless it is an automatic water system!).
  3. Remove the hay when tacking up.
  4. Skip out.

The Horse:

Always:

  • Tie the horse up when completing tasks on or around him.
  • Tie the horse up facing the doorway, so you approach his head.
  • Tie the horse up to breakable string, using a quick release knot (do not thread the end of the rope through the loop).
  • Assess the horse's mood when working around him, and deal with accordingly.
  • Use the correct grooming brushes on the individual horse.

Never:

  • Tie the horse up at the back of the stable.
  • Leave a nervous, or anxious, horse unattended when he is tied up.
  • Leave a horse untied whilst tacked up.
  • Leave a horse in the stable untied with the door open.
  • Leave a horse unattended on a wet, slippery or bare floor.
  • Leave stable doors half opened, either close them or pin them back to the wall.
  • Use mucking out tools in the direction of the horse.

Keep the Area Tidy:

  • Never leave mucking out tools in the stable with the horse.
  • Skip out as often as possible.
  • Mucking out tools must always be returned to their designated area, once finished with.
  • Do not leave tack or rugs on the floor.
  • Keep all the grooming equipment together.
  • Never leave anything in the stable with the horse which could cause him harm.
